shell grotto, margate

At risk of this blog turning into a tourist guide, I have just a few photos to share of my trip to Kent last weekend!

I visited Margate, partly to see the shell grotto; a place that I had seen mentioned on other blogs and websites over the last few years, and was kind of intrigued. I spent some time wandering around the pretty residential streets of Margate old town before finding it.

The grotto is underground, beneath Victorian houses and is made up of a series of tunnels and small rooms. There are many theories about when and why the grotto was built, but no-one knows for sure. It certainly is very beautiful though, albeit a little strange, and definitely worth a visit!

I also visited the very lovely Botany Bay, near Broadstairs, as well as Deal and Canterbury, and will be sharing a few more photos tomorrow.
