I’m delighted that some bees have moved into my garden! I’ve had the bee hotel for a couple of years now, and this is the first time the bees have taken up residence! I think they are worker bees, as they’re very small, but I’m no expert!
I read this article http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2011/mar/10/globalisation-agriculture-industry-exacerbating-bee-decline a few weeks ago, and it really does seem like bees are becoming endangered. I’m sure the effect of losing the bees would be much greater than just a lack of honey. Without bees to pollinate fruit and veg our agriculture would surely be affected.
There seems to be a growing awareness in this country of the need to protect bees, and hopefully the action being taken will be in time. For my small part, I’ve planted a ‘bee border’ of wildflowers in my garden, which is meant to attract bees and other wildlife. It looks beautiful in the summer and attracts butterflies too!
