Making ‘the best’ birthday cake

I love making Nigella’s Best Birthday Cake for special occasions! It looks so impressive, but is really very easy. It has the unusual addition of custard powder to the cake batter and buttercream. This makes the sponge very light and airy, perfect!

I’ll be making one for myself later this week, as I turn another year older on Thursday. I’ll take it into work to share, and probably make a batch of simple cupcakes or cookies too…there are a lot of people in my office & they do really like their cake!

Any ideas what kind of cupcakes or cookies I could bake? My cupcakes never turn out quite right…always more like small fairy cakes.
